6 Ways To Be Happy When It Gets Dark Early

Now that we’re well into the end of the year, every day is like a guessing game of “Is something in my life making me sad? Or is it just my seasonal depression?” The last thing we needed in 2020 was for it to be dark out at 4pm, but science is science.

So, how can we deal with it in such a way that we aren’t dreading each day? I have a few thoughts.

1. Make your own light

If you’ve followed me on Instagram for a while (if you’re not following me, fix that here), you know that I am obsessed with this candle and you would be too if you could smell it through the computer. And if bringing out your twinkle lights a little early this year is what would lift your spirits, then drape those twinkle lights ALL over.

2. Get cozy

Make your home as cozy as possible in every way. Get yourself some slippers that make you happy. Get a fuzzy blanket and loads of pillows so you can just melt into the coziness of your couch or bed.

3. Create an evening routine.

We all know the power of a good morning routine to get us out of bed in the morning. Well, this time of year it’s important to have an evening routine that we’re looking forward to all day. Maybe you have a few hours in the early evening where you read a good book. Maybe you take a long bath every night after dinner.

4. Get creative with dinner recipes.

Now that it’s dark outside by the time you’re making dinner, you may not feel motivated to cook at all. Find some recipes that you are excited to try and experiment with them each night. But also, get yourself takeout when you feel like it.

5. Get outside.

If you used to stay active by getting outside and getting your body moving after work, try moving that routine to before work so you can do it in the daylight. Take a morning walk around the block with your quarantine bae before starting your day.

6. Connect with friends.

Chances are, a lot of your friends are struggling through their seasonal depression also. Check in with each other. Check in on your friends who seem like they’re going through a rough time and check in on your friends who seem like they have it all together. Share your tips of how you’re managing your seasonal depression with each other.
